Paul Blomfield MP

A strong voice for Sheffield Central

News

I'm taking part in an Education Question Time at St Mary's Church and Community Centre on Bramall Lane at 6.30pm today. I'm pleased to have the chance to make the case for proper funding for our schools. Under the Tories, education is in crisis - just see the deep cuts facing schools across Sheffield: https://www.schoolcuts.org.uk/#!/

I’m really enjoying the election campaign. It’s great to get out knocking on doors and meeting so many people – and I’m hugely grateful for all the support that I’ve received. It’s great to see all the posters and garden stakes going up everywhere (if you want want one, get in touch here). I’ll be knocking on lots more doors in the week ahead – and, in between, there are a few events too.

Yesterday I spoke about the environment and Brexit at Sheffield University at a great event organised by the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures. I'm concerned that environmental protection will be a casualty of a Tory Brexit – and climate change has fallen off the Government's agenda, although it's one of the most pressing issues we face.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week, and the Tories have announced their plans on the issue. One in four of us will have a mental health condition at some point in our lives. But too many people – particularly young people - aren't getting the help they need.

One of the great things about an election campaign is that it gives me lots of time to get out knocking on doors and meeting constituents. I’ve been doing just that every day over the last week, and will be for the week ahead. But there’s time too for other events – some planned before the election and others arranged for it.

I’m really pleased that today Labour has committed funding the 43 forces across England and Wales to hire an extra 10,000 officers operating in community policing roles.

It's been an incredibly quick turnaround since Theresa May’s surprise announcement, but Parliament will be dissolved a minute after midnight tonight. So after today I’ll cease to be a Member of Parliament, but will instead be a candidate, campaigning to be re-elected as MP for Sheffield Central on 8th June. I’ll keep you in touch with my campaign through my website, and my Facebook page which you can like here.

This morning I sought assurances from the Speaker of the House of Commons that I can continue to support the appeal against the deportation of my constituent Mr Pride Mbi, once Parliament is dissolved for the General Election.
