Floods Appeal Fundraising Supper Night -27th February
In February I hosted a fundraising Supper Night for the Pakistan Floods Appeal. It was a great success and we raised £1240 for the Floods Appeal!
I organised the event for the Pakistan Floods Appeal because, seven months on from when the floods first struck, the impact of this enormous disaster is out of the headlines and yet there remains a huge need for help and support.
I am proud that the UK was one of the first countries to respond to the disaster by providing tents and shelter to 1.3 million people, basic health care to 2.3 million people and safe drinking water to millions more. However, Pakistan still has a long way to go to recover; some areas of Sindh are still under water and hundreds of thousands of people are still living in temporary camps. As we all know, reconstructing the millions of homes, bridges, and schools that were destroyed will take years.
Thank you to everyone who came and donated to our appeal.
From Dagenham to Sheffield: Celebrating International Women’s Day - 10th March 2011
To celebrate International Women’s Day 2011 Paul Blomfield, together with Sheffield Students’ Union Women’s Committee and Unite the Union, arranged a special screening of ‘Made in Dagenham’. A packed audience of over 300 people attended.
Paul said: “Made in Dagenham shows how ordinary women successfully campaigned for equal pay between women and men. International Women’s Day is an opportunity to remind people that the pay gap still exists today and needs tackling.”
Rachel Steyne, Women’s Officer at Sheffield Students’ Union, introduced the film and said: “It was great to work with Paul and Unite to host the film, and to welcome so many women to the Students Union.”
Unite's Regional Equalities and Women’s Officer Sue Pollard also spoke and said “The T&G union, now Unite, supported the Dagenham women and trade unions are as important today as they were then. Ordinary women can make a difference and Unite is continuing to campaign to reduce the pay gap between women and men.”
2011 is the 100th International Women’s Day and this year’s theme is equal access to education and training. To support this work there was a collection which raised the fantastic total of £550. These funds will go towards the Sheffield Girl’s College in Bagh, Pakistan which was being rebuilt thanks to donations from Sheffield following the Kashmir Earthquake and a Haitian organization called Solidatite Fanm Ayisyen (Solidarity with Haitian Women) which supports women victims of domestic violence and operates shelters for women victims.
