Tuesday 2nd June – After the pomp and ceremony of last week’s State Opening of Parliament, we’re now starting to consider the Government plans laid out in the Queen’s Speech, which is the subject of scrutiny this week. I was in the Chamber for the opening of the debate on Britain in the World, in as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Hilary Benn in his new role as Shadow Foreign Secretary, and I’ll be speaking in Thursday’s debate on the economy.

I’ve various meetings with colleagues from across parties to get the All-Party Group on Migration and the All-Party Group on Students, which I chaired in the last Parliament, up and running in this one. I’ll be at an event organised by the Trade Union Group of MPs, of which I’m a member, and I’m catching up with some of the candidates for Labour’s leadership -; you can read my blog on the challenges we face here

Back home in Sheffield on Friday, I’m visiting Nether Edge Primary School and have meetings with the Chief Executive of South Yorkshire Housing Association, the Director of the Sheffield Political Economy Research Institute, the Chief Executive of Museums Sheffield, and the Managing Director of John Lewis. I’ll also be speaking at an awareness event on the situation in South Yemen organised by the Yemeni Community Association.
