My Work in Parliament
This page tells you about my work representing Sheffield Central in Parliament. As an MP I spend most of the week in Westminster in Parliament. I represent you in Parliament by raising your concerns, issues and views in debates, questioning Government Ministers about policy and voting on new legislation. In Parliament I am also a member of a Select Committee and the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
My Speeches and Questions

A lot of the questions I ask and speeches I make are because constituents have contacted me about a particular issue.

My Maiden Speech
A MPs' first speech in Parliament, their Maiden Speech, is a big moment for every new MP. It’s the first time that we speak in the House of Commons Chamber.
I gave my Maiden Speech on June 2, 2010 and I described why I am so proud to represent Sheffield Central. In the speech I paid tribute to my predecessor Richard Caborn, highlighted the importance of the city’s universities, industry and Forgemasters to Sheffield and the impact severe cuts will have on them.
You can read the whole speech here: http://www.theyworkforyou.com/debate/?id=2010-06-02c.524.0
Business, Innovation and Skills Committee Member
I am a member of the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee. This is a committee of 11 MPs, from all parties, who study in detail the work of the Business, Innovation and Skills and related issues. This includes business and industry, further and higher education, science and innovation, skills and apprenticeships. Sheffield needs new jobs, strong universities and growth in industry and this position allows me to promote these policies. We also pay careful attention to the Business Department’s activities and spending.

Parliamentary Private Secretary to Hilary Benn MP
Since October 2010 I've been the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Hilary Benn, who is Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. Our Shadow team will be making the case that local government does make a real and positive difference to people’s lives. But to do that, we need strong councils working with their communities, not the phoney localism of this Government that tells Councils what to do while devolving responsibility for cuts
My other roles
I'm also Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Universities and the Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Motor Neurone Disease.
Early Day Motions
An Early Day Motion, or EDM, is a short statement that MPs can submit which states a view on a particular subject. If other MPs agree with the motion put forward we can sign it to show our support. Early Day Motions are used to raise awareness of a certain issue.
You can find out which Early Day Motions I’ve signed by looking here. http://www.edms.org.uk/mps/24943/index.rss
