My priorities for Sheffield Central
These are my priorities for Sheffield Central.
1. A strong economy for Sheffield.
First and foremost I’ll work to make sure everyone in Sheffield Central receives as much help as possible through these tough times. I want Sheffield Central to be in the best position for the upturn, so we need a new approach. The banks have let us all down. We need to build our economy on firm foundations. Let’s use Sheffield’s strengths to create real jobs. Our two universities, manufacturing skills, local businesses and public services must be central to our future.
2. Safe communities and homes for all.
Everyone needs to be able to live and work together feeling safe. I support tough action on crime and anti-social behaviour. I want good facilities in every community: the best schools, parks, health facilities and transport for all. I will work for more affordable housing to rent and buy. Decent homes in decent areas. People forced into mortgage and rent arrears need to be protected, so they can stay in their homes.
3. Tackling climate change for our children’s future.
We must do everything we can to tackle climate change. It’s our responsibility to our children. Even in these tough times, we’ve got to make it easier for us all to live greener lives. This issue won’t go away unless we tackle it. Heat and power must be affordable and environmentally sustainable. This challenge provides opportunities for us. I will work to establish Sheffield as a centre of green manufacturing jobs in the renewable energy sector.
4. A healthy city.
Record investment in hospitals and local health services has made us healthier than ever. People are getting treated faster and living longer than ever. But too many health inequalities remain –across our constituency there is a life expectancy gap of over 10 years. To tackle this we need better health education to help us prevent illnesses caused by modern living. We must ensure everyone has good local health facilities available when they need them.
5. Fair opportunities for all.
Having worked in education all my life, I know the difference it can make. It changes lives and it’s only fair that everyone has the same chance to do their best. From early years to adulthood, we need to provide the best education and training for all. Our kids deserve the best start in life and everyone must have the opportunity to develop new skills for a changing economy. Above all, there must be no barriers that prevent anyone from achieving their potential.
