A clear choice
Paul Blomfield has welcomed the start of the General Election campaign, saying that “it provides a clear choice for the British people between a fair future for all with Labour, or a change that puts the recovery at risk and threatens public services with the Tories.”
As the election was called, ‘The Guardian’ published the latest ICM poll which reported that the Tory lead had fallen to just four points. Paul said, “this confirms what I’m hearing from local people; as we get closer to the election they’re looking harder at Labour and the Conservatives and seeing that the Tories are offering a change we can’t afford.”
“Only Labour or the Tories can form the next Government, whether as a majority or minority administration. A vote for any other Party locally will only help the Tories nationally. So voters are right to look at their priorities. Despite their tough talk on closing the deficit, they plan to drop Labour’s increase in national insurance and stick to their inheritance tax plans which will give a £200,000 handout to the 3000 richest families in the country.”
“People are seeing through David Cameron’s makeover of the Conservative Party. Beneath the surface, they’re the same old Tories; sticking up for the wealthy and planning deep cuts into public services. They would scrap Labour’s guarantees on NHS treatment, they would raid education budgets to create new cut-price schools based on a model that has failed in Sweden.”
“This will be one of the most important elections in more than 60 years. Whoever wins will have the chance to shape the direction of our country for a generation. I’m confident that people won’t want to turn the clock back to the Tories, and will vote for a fairer future with Labour.”
