International Women's Day 2017

Paul Blomfield MP and Sheffield Students’ Union Women’s Committee invite you to a free film screening of Belle, sponsored by Unite the Union.

There are a limited number of tickets available, please book soon to avoid disappointment. Tickets can be booked through Eventbrite here or you can ring Paul's office (0114 272 2882) or send an email

Directed by Amma Asante, Belle is a must see, award-winning British period drama, inspired by the 1779 painting of Dido Elizabeth Belle. As an illegitimate mixed race woman, Belle is taken in by her great uncle, the 1st Earl of Mansfield. The film follows her struggles as a black woman and daughter of a slave living among aristocrats in 18th Century England. Despite her status in society, Belle’s strong will and determination allow her to defy all expectations and ultimately influence the course of history. You can watch the trailer here.

At the event there will be the opportunity to donate to our two sponsored charities, in solidarity with women across Sheffield. This year we will be supporting Sheffield Rape Crisis (SRASAC), and Ashiana Sheffield. Sheffield Rape Crisis provides support for victims of rape or sexual abuse by offering a confidential helpline as well as support, counselling, and advice. Ashiana works with Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) women and children in Sheffield fleeing domestic and sexual abuse and trafficking.

The screening will begin with a reception with free refreshments and the opportunity to meet with representatives from the charities, from 18:15 in the Activities Zone. The film will begin at 19:00 in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium, following contributions from Serena Cavasin; Sheffield Students’ Union Women’s Officer 2016/17, Paul Blomfield; MP, and Pat Pepper; Unite the Union.

Admission to both the reception and screening is free; rather than charge entry, we ask that you donate as much as you feel able to our sponsored charities.

If you can't attend the event or would like to donate in advance to the charities you can do it through my Justgiving page.
