Free school meals

High cost credit

I pressed Treasury Ministers to extend the successful payday loans cap, which I helped secure, to doorstep lenders and ‘rent-to-own’ shops like Brighthouse to reduce problem debt. Read more.

Brexit – one year to go

With 12 months to go, I’ve spoken at several events as a Shadow Brexit Minister, on stopping an extreme and damaging Brexit, including a TUC conference on ‘Brexit and Yorkshire: A year to go?’ Read more.

‘Windrush’ injustice

I co-signed a letter, co-ordinated by my colleague David Lammy MP, which secured a Government climb-down on the rights of British residents who arrived from Commonwealth countries before 1973. Read more.

I welcomed 50 local people to Westminster on one of my regular group trips. If you’re interested in joining a future trip, or want to visit on your own, drop me an email.

Rail electrification

I joined with Clive Betts MP to challenge the Transport Secretary on his decision to scrap electrification of the Midland Mainline, following a damning report from the National Audit Office. Read here.

Rough sleeping

I joined PCSO Steve Hart, who does a great job supporting rough sleepers, on his 6am tour of city centre doorways, met with Cllr Jayne Dunn, who leads for the Council on the issue, and spoke in a Commons debate on how we can help more people off the streets.

Childhood Obesity

I met with the Director of Public Health to discuss the growing challenge of childhood obesity, as part of my work with Shine Academy, a great local charity tackling the issue in Manor.

Esteli Parade

I helped with the naming of a riverside walk to mark 30 years of friendship with our Nicaraguan twin town of Esteli and have written to the Ambassador about recent protests there. Find more about supporting twinning activities here
