A strong voice for Sheffield Central

Keeping in touch - February 2016

Paul Blomfield, MP for Sheffield Central

February 2016

It's been a busy month in Parliament and now the EU referendum date has been set for the 23rd June things will only get busier. This month's newsletter highlights some of the things I've been working on for the last few weeks, but do get in touch on any other issues.

We are using a new software to send out my e-newsletter so please let me know if there are any technical problems with this email.

EU Referendum: a crucial decision

Now we know; the referendum will be on 23 June. Last Sunday I made the case for our EU membership at a regional GMB Conference, and I’ll be making it again and again over the next 17 weeks. I’m working with Alan Johnson on Labour’s In for Britain campaign, because I passionately believe that Britain is better off in Europe. It’s not just the jobs, which are really important, but the protections the EU has given to workers, consumers and the environment. Lots of people have been in touch with me, offering to support the campaign. If you’d like to join us, drop me an email.

You can read my blogpost on why I think we must remain in the EU here

Opposing the Sheffield BIS Office closure

I’m co-ordinating Parliamentary efforts to reverse the Government’s decision to close Sheffield’s Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) Office and move 247 civil service jobs from Sheffield to London, which is devastating for those losing their jobs, damaging to the local economy and makes decision-making more London-centric.  I grilled Business Secretary Sajid Javid and the department’s most senior civil servant Martin Donnelly about the decision at the BIS Select Committee (you can watch here) – forcing them to admit there is no business case for the closure. I then worked with colleagues to secure a Parliamentary debate to press Ministers to review the decision.

Do join me in signing the petition urging the Government to scrap their plans here

Fighting for Forgemasters

I’ve been pushing Ministers to give Sheffield Forgemasters the chance to bid for work on the Hinckley Point power station since last October.  Finally Business Minister Anna Soubry has admitted that Forgemasters can produce 80% of forgings for Hinkley Point C. Now it's time to see British companies like Forgemasters given the chance to tender for contracts and I’ll continue to press the issue.

Junior Doctors deserve respect, not a contract imposed on them

I challenged Jeremy Hunt about his decision to impose a contract on junior doctors, rather than negotiate a deal, highlighting how it will impact on already low morale. Junior doctors do a great job every day of the year and, alongside my Labour colleagues, I’ll continue to make the case for a fair settlement.

Ending the scandal of food waste

Lots of people have contacted me about the scandal of food waste. In Parliament I pressed Government Ministers why they blocked Shadow Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Secretary Kerry McCarthy’s Food Waste Reduction Bill, which would have done so much to help end the scandal of food waste.
