Welcome to my latest update for a month when I was drawn for my first PMQ since Theresa May took over, pressed Ministers on household debt, raised almost £1000 for local women’s charities, and held meetings in Brussels on Brexit. Read more below and, as ever, let me have your feedback.

Theresa May accepted my request to meet inspirational members of Sheffield Young Carers, and hear their proposals for better support, after I raised it at Prime Minister’s Questions. Read more.

Brexit

As a Shadow Brexit Minister I visited Brussels for meetings with MEPs, the Commission and the UK Permanent Representatives – and spoke for Labour in a Commons debate (watch an extract here) and at Brexit Questions (watch here).

Funding women's charities

Thanks to everyone who came to my International Women’s Day screening of Hidden Figures to raise money for local charities and to those who’ve donated online. Help us reach our £1000 target by donating here.

Supporting student voices

I represent more students than any other MP and pressed the Universities Minister about a damning report on the way people with “close links to student unions” were blocked from appointment to the Office for Students Board. Read more.

Seeking resolution on trees

Together with Louise Haigh MP, I met with the Police and Crime Commissioner and Council leaders to explore ways we can resolve the recent conflicts over the Council’s tree replacement programme. Read more.

Local policing

I met with Sheffield’s new Chief Superintendent to discuss local policing issues raised in my Big Conversation.

Aid for Yemen

During International Development Questions I pressed Ministers on taking action to help aid reach victims of the appalling crisis in Yemen. Watch here.

Backing UCU pensions action

I’ve been backing Sheffield University staff in their action to save their pension scheme, joining pickets and speaking at one of their events.

Household debt

During Treasury Questions I challenged Ministers on the way Government rules around repayment of advance loans for universal credit are pushing people into debt. Read my question here.

University Funding

I spoke in a Westminster Hall debate raising concerns about the Government’s approach on fees, teaching quality, nursing bursaries, international students and other issues. Read my speech here.

Free school meals

I backed moves to overturn Government plans that could see more than 7,000 children in Sheffield miss out on the free school meals they need.

Really NEET

I visited this great project working with young people not in employment, education or training to discuss how I could support them.

Visiting Parliament

I help lots of groups that want to visit Parliament and this week welcomed ones from both our universities. If you’d like to bring a group or visit with friends get in touch.
