Welcome to my May newsletter covering my work over the last month including Sheffield schools, Gaza, Universal Credit, Brexit and more.


Schools crisis

I raised the funding crisis in schools with the Education Secretary in Parliament - read more - and met with a group of primary and secondary head teachers in Sheffield. I’ll be using every opportunity to push for the resources our schools need.

 

Child obesity

I was delighted to bring staff and young people from SHINE Health Academy to Parliament to talk to MPs about the best ways to tackle child obesity. Read more about their campaign for funding and better commissioning guidance around specialist services for children with weight issues.


Universal Credit

I met Treasury Minister John Glen with Citizens Advice to discuss my concerns on the way debt repayment rules are pushing some Universal Credit claimants into greater hardship (see more here).


Brexit

I led for Labour in a debate on post-Brexit customs arrangements (read more) and questioned David Davis about why he is allowing Brexit extremists like Jacob Rees-Mogg to determine Government policy (read more).


Gaza

I joined parliamentarians in solidarity with the people of Palestine and wrote to the Foreign Secretary following the appalling attack on protestors in Gaza. Read more.


G4S contracts

I challenged Ministers on the renewal of G4S contracts for running Brook House and Tinsley House immigration removal centres. Read more here.


Votes at 16

I visited Sheffield College, as part of the Fair Vote campaign for 16 and 17 year olds to get the vote. We talked about the campaign, which I back, and reasons for young people to vote. Read more.

Dignity in Dying

I sponsored a Dignity in Dying event in Parliament to give people with personal experience of the impact of the current law preventing assisted dying the chance to share their concerns with MPs and Peers.


Chamber of Commerce

I spoke to members of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry about Brexit, devolution, apprenticeship and local skills needs.

The Floow

I visited fast-growing innovative local tech company the Floow to catch up on their work and meet with Sheffield Digital Coalition, which has been formed to champion the sector.


Milennifest

I joined Millennifest #SHAPETHEFUTURE to speak on social activism and political participation for young people.


International Workers Memorial Day

On International Workers Memorial Day, I joined trade union activists at an event to remember people killed and injured at work and to make the case that unionised workplaces are safer.


Community notices

Sheffield Esteli Society - Sheffield has a lively twinning relationship with Esteli in Nicaragua.  Every 4 years the Society organises a delegation to work alongside on projects and visit  green tourism initiatives. More details here.

Sheffield Mental Health Action Group will be having a fish fun day (with big aquariums & big fish) to promote their latest activity project and to raise awareness. Sunday 24th June 11am – 5pm. 46 Creswick Street, Langsett Estate, S6 2TN. Telephone: 0114 234 6428.

Small Park Big Runs for Palestine - Meersbrook Park – Saturday and Sunday, 16 and 17 June - Raising funds for Sheffield Palestine Women's Scholarship Fund and a new PSC Children's Project - the Never Stop Dreaming Healing Project in Khuza'a in Gaza. More information here.
