Keeping in touch - October 2017

Paul Blomfield, MP for Sheffield Central
Keeping in touch - October 2017

Welcome to my October newsletter. My last month’s been split between my Big Conversation and work in Parliament.  If you haven’t had the chance to fill in my survey, please do it online here. From speaking on the Nuclear Safeguards Bill to welcoming the Chinese Ambassador to Sheffield, it’s been a varied few weeks. Read more below and, as ever, do keep in touch.

The Big Conversation

I was delighted to meet more than 1000 people across 40 events during the Big Conversation – thanks to everyone who got involved. I’m compiling a report about the issues raised and the action I’ll be taking, which I’ll publish next month. But there’s still time to fill in my survey online if you haven’t already – it will only take a couple of minutes.

Brexit and Nuclear Safeguards

We expected the EU Withdrawal Bill (once known as the ‘Great Repeal Bill’) to be discussed in Committee Stage when Parliament returned, but Government divisions over Brexit have created paralysis, so they haven’t tabled it yet. Instead, they brought forward the Brexit-related Nuclear Safeguards Bill on which I spoke for our front bench – you can read my speech here and an article I wrote with Keir Starmer about the issue here

Universal Credit

I joined other MPs in writing to the Work and Pensions Secretary calling for a delay to the roll-out of Universal Credit (UC) until the problems that are causing hardship and debt are fixed. Labour’s motion on the issue was agreed when, facing defeat, Government MPs abstained. Read more here.

Protecting the River Don

I met with World Wildlife Fund campaigners to discuss the pollution challenges facing the River Don and other UK rivers – and the risks to environmental protection posed by Brexit. Read more here.

World Week

As a long-time advocate for international students, I was delighted to join Sheffield University’s World Week Parade celebrating the contribution of international students to Sheffield and the UK.

Confucius Institute

I welcomed the Chinese Ambassador to Sheffield and spoke with him at a celebration of the ten year anniversary of the world-leading Sheffield Confucius Institute, which is a focal point for China-related activities in Sheffield and the broader region.

Stay Well this Winter

I’m backing the NHS campaign for more people to get vaccinated against flu. If you’re in one of the groups who are particularly susceptible – such as pensioners, pregnant women or the parent of a young child - talk to your GP or pharmacist. To find out if you’re eligible for a free jab click here.

Roundabout 40th Birthday

I was pleased to join the 40th Birthday celebrations of local youth homeless charity Roundabout, who do a great job for some very vulnerable young people.

I called on the Government to take action on university research funding, after their failure to reach agreement had led the EU Commission to say it couldn’t guarantee UK participation in Horizon 2020 post-March 2019.  See here

St Wilfrid's Place

I joined the opening of St Wilfrid’s Place, for which I’ve helped to raise funds. It’s a great new initiative by St Wilfrid's Centre, providing supported housing for adults with a history of homelessness.
