Paul Blomfield MP

A strong voice for Sheffield Central

Keeping in touch - September 2017

Paul Blomfield, MP for Sheffield Central
Keeping in touch - September 2017

Welcome to my September update, which comes a week earlier than usual. Parliament’s been back for a couple of weeks after the August break and focussed on Brexit. But there’s lots else been happening too as you’ll see below. We’re now in recess for the Party Conferences, and I’m running my community consultation the Big Conversation with events across the constituency. Do come along to share your views - and fill in my survey online if you haven’t already.

The EU 'Repeal Bill'

The European Union (Withdrawal) Bill, or ‘Repeal Bill’, took its first step in Parliament. As a Shadow Brexit Minister, I’m part of Labour’s team challenging plans to give too much power to Ministers, undermine people’s rights and put the economy at risk. Read more in my Yorkshire Post article.

Tuition fees

In a debate in the House of Commons, I called for a complete overhaul of the unfair and unsustainable student finance system which is saddling graduates with debt. Watch here.

Challenging discrimination against EU nationals...

I’ve been working with the campaign group the3Million to highlight evidence of EU nationals in the UK being illegally prevented from renting or buying properties, getting jobs and booking holidays. Read more.

...and making the case for Brits in the EU

I’ve also been working with the group representing the 1.2 million UK nationals in the EU, the British in Europe, and led for Labour’s front bench in a debate on their concerns – see more here.

Northern transport

I joined other Yorkshire MPs in writing to the Transport Secretary calling for an end to the neglect of transport in the north (read more), and joined local campaign groups in welcoming a giant plug to Sheffield as part of the #ElectrifyOurTrains campaign (see here).

International students

As Co-Chair of the All-Party Group for International Students I welcomed new data showing Theresa May’s Home Office had been wrong on its numbers and want a Government inquiry into the impact of international students in the UK to lead to new policies. Read more.

Immigration detention

As the BBC’s Panorama programme exposed mistreatment in immigration removal centres, I wrote for the Guardian on why the Government should live up to its promises and stop indefinite detention for immigration purposes. Read more.

Welcoming Hallam Student Officers

I was pleased to welcome Sheffield Hallam University Union Officers to Parliament. If you would like to visit Westminster, individually or as a group, let me know.

Scrap the cap

I met with nurses to discuss the Royal College of Nursing’s Scrap the Cap campaign and backed Labour’s motion calling for the pay cap for NHS staff to be lifted immediately.

Wear it pink

I am pleased to support Breast Cancer Now’s annual ‘wear it pink’ campaign, raising funds and awareness for life-saving research.

Debt and personal finance

I was re-elected as Secretary of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Debt and Personal Finance, a role I’ve held following my work to regulate payday lenders.

16 to 19 year old funding

I backed the Association of Colleges’ campaign for more Government investment in 16 to 19 year old education.
