Nuclear Safeguards, Universal Credit, medical devices and Millennifest – some of my week ahead

It’s obviously a shorter Parliamentary week, because of the Bank Holiday. Today I’ll be meeting with the Urology Trade Association in my role as a Shadow Brexit Minister to discuss the impact of Brexit on the regulation of medical devices. Then I’ll be in the Chamber for the final consideration of the Nuclear Safeguards Bill, one of the few pieces of Brexit-related legislation that the Government’s been able to progress.

Tomorrow starts at an All Party Parliamentary Group on universities breakfast event about higher education across the devolved nations and then I’ll be meeting Treasury Minister John Glen on an issue I’ve been pressing on debt repayment affecting some Universal Credit claimants (See more here). In the afternoon I hope to speak in a debate on the Education (Student Support) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2018, which has been initiated by Labour to stop the further withdrawal of bursaries for certain categories of nursing students, but I’ll also be at a Labour Policy Commission on Brexit and Immigration.

I’ll be back in Sheffield on Thursday for an event organised by the Regional CBI; as well as meetings with the Manager of Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID);  a Director of the EVO group of companies, which is headquartered in Sheffield; and the CEO of the South Yorkshire Housing Association. I’ll also be visiting the offices of the fast-growing local innovative tech company the Floow.

On Saturday I’ll be having one of my regular advice surgeries and then going to Millennifest #SHAPETHEFUTURE where I’ll be leading a discussion around social activism and local participation for young people.
