Sheffield in Westminster, WASPI, international students and fire safety – some of my week ahead

Today I’ll be welcoming visitors from Sheffield on one of the regular trips I organise to Westminster (get in touch if you’re interested in a future visit) and I’ll be talking with students from Birkdale School who are also visiting Parliament today. I’ll also be at an event on the post-Brexit future for higher education, skills and the hi-tech economy organised by the University of Cambridge.

Tomorrow I’ll be meeting with the Chief Fire Officer of South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to discuss fire safety in high rise blocks. Most of Sheffield's high rise housing is in my constituency, so I've been liaising closely with Sheffield Council since the Grenfell Tower disaster and raised my concerns in last week's debate on the Queen's Speech.  I’ll also be catching up with the Association of Colleges, meeting the President of Azad Kashmir, and hosting an event with the University of Sheffield to promote the case for a change of policy on international students - something I've campaigned on throughout the last two Parliaments.

On Wednesday I’ll be in a debate seeking fair transitional arrangements for the increase in pension age for women born in the 1950s, where I’ll be pressing the concerns of local Women Against State Pension Inequality campaigners, who I met recently

On Thursday I'll be in the Commons Chamber for a debate on Brexit and international trade before heading back to Sheffield for the Annual General Meeting of my local Labour Party in which we’ll discuss the recent General Election and developments at Westminster. On Friday I’ll be having a team day with my staff to plan for the year ahead and on Saturday I’ll be holding an advice surgery and attending an open day at the Broomhall Centre.

If you’re interested in what I’ve been up to over the last month do have a look at my latest newsletter that was sent out last week. You’ll also find information there about a job vacancy in my office.
