I’ve been working with colleagues from across the political parties on this issue and we’ve achieved some progress. The Immigration Act, which became law last month, contains the right for immigration detainees to challenge their detention every four months, a right which didn’t exist before. But this is still not enough. We need a culture change in the Home Office so that detention is only ever used as a last resort. Not only is being detained indefinitely hugely damaging to detainees’ mental health, it doesn’t work! Cheaper more effective methods are being used elsewhere and we need to learn from them.
