I’m heading back to Westminster this morning, where David Cameron will make a statement, and be questioned on, last week’s referendum on EU membership in which I campaigned strongly to remain. 

I’m pleased that my view was overwhelmingly backed by voters in my constituency but deeply disappointed that, by the narrowest of margins, the country decided to end our 43-year old partnership with the rest of Europe.

Those who voted to leave will also be disappointed to see the leaders of that campaign backtracking on the promises that they made to win the vote – on more money for the NHS and on immigration. I’ll be pressing them on their pledges, on how we overcome the economic damage we’re already seeing, and on how we heal the deep divisions their campaign provoked.

On Tuesday the Business, Innovation and Skills Committee, of which I’m a member, will be holding another evidence session as part of our inquiry into access for finance. I’ll also have a meeting with the officers of the new All Party Parliamentary Group on International Students, which I set up with Lord Bilimoria. In the evening I’ll be at a summer reception by the APPG on Universities, of which I’m Secretary.

On Wednesday, I’ve been drawn for Prime Minister’s Questions, and later the Sub-Committee on the Education, Skills and the Economy will be hearing oral evidence on the value of apprenticeships and considering our report into careers advice. The next day I’ll be in the House of Commons to debate plans to privatise the Land Registry, which I’ve opposed in a joint letter to the Government with colleagues, before returning to Sheffield.

Other meetings throughout the week include National Open College Network, Office for Fair Access, HSBC, Guild HE, IDP Education, the Committee of University Chairs, as well as a delegation from the local Bangladeshi community -; and I’ll be speaking at a UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) conference in Sheffield.
