Parliament was prorogued last week and won’t be sitting until after Wednesday’s State Opening of Parliament and the Queen’s Speech, which sets out the Government’s plans for the next parliamentary session. Some of their proposals have already been floated in the media and I’m really worried about threats to the independence of the BBC and plans for our universities, on which I’ve commented in today’s Yorkshire Post.

The forthcoming referendum on the European Union will be central to my week. I’m finalising a message which volunteers will be distributing to all 40,000 households across my constituency, and today and tomorrow I’ll be out meeting constituents to talk about the issue -; as well as going to King Edwards and Park Academy to talk to students about the vote.

I’m also pleased to on Friday be joining Baroness Doreen Lawrence for the opening of Hallam University’s new Charles St Building, for the University’s Institute of Education, and later we’ll be together on a panel discussing socially inclusive education. Then, over the weekend, I’ll be out knocking on doors again, campaigning for Britain to remain in the EU.
