Welcoming Gill Furniss to Parliament, debating Sheffield’s BIS Office closure and hosting Ed Miliband in Sheffield – some of my week ahead

I’ll be introducing my new Labour colleague Gill Furniss to Parliament this morning, following her election as the MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough.  I’ve known Gill for years and I’m sure she will do a great job standing up for Sheffield, just as her husband Harry Harpham did during his all too brief as an MP.

Later today I’m leading a cross-party debate in Parliament on the closure of Sheffield’s BIS Office where I’ll urge the Government to drop their plans and keep the 247 jobs in Sheffield. If you haven’t already done so, do sign the petition here to add your support to the campaign. I’ll also be launching a new All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on International Students, which I’ve set up and will co-chair with Lord Bilimoria. In the evening I’ll be speaking in the House of Commons on the Immigration Bill, which I scrutinised line-by-line at Committee Stage.

On Tuesday the Business, Innovation and Skills Select Committee, of which I’m a member, will be questioning the new pub adjudicator about his role monitoring the relationship between pub companies and local landlords. I’ll also be meeting with Unison to discuss apprenticeships, which are the focus of an inquiry by the Sub-Committee on Education, Skills and the Economy, of which I’m also a member. I’ll also be at an event on a new report by Hallam University into the impact of welfare reform.

Later in the week I’m meeting with Cambridge University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education to discuss the Government’s higher education white paper before heading back to Sheffield for events around staying in the European Union; I’ll be speaking at Sheffield High School and launching the Labour In for Britain Sheffield campaign. You can find more about my views on Europe and links to useful websites here.

I’m pleased to be welcoming Ed Miliband to Sheffield on Friday to talk about climate change and Britain in Europe. Then, at the weekend, I’ll be holding one of my regular surgeries for constituents and I’ll be out campaigning on the EU ahead of the 23 June referendum.
