Paul Blomfield Former MP for Sheffield Central
I’ve been selected to join Labour’s team on the Nationality and Borders Bill Committee, which I opposed at Second Reading, which is going to take up a lot of my time in Parliament over the next few weeks. The Committee meets throughout most of Tuesdays and Thursdays and this week we’ll be gathering evidence before beginning the line-by-line consideration of the Bill which makes major changes to the asylum system.
I’ll also be meeting with Detention Action to discuss the Bill, as well as recent removal flights and plans for removal centres. I’ve worked with the group previously in my campaign to end indefinite immigration detention (see more on this and my other work on asylum and migration issues here).
I’ll also be joining a meeting of the All-Party University Group, of which I’m Secretary, to discuss the Health and Care Bill, and I’ll be catching up the Vice Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University on Friday as the new academic year starts. I’ll also be meeting the local NHS Clinical Commissioning Group on the latest position with Covid-19 – and getting my flu jab!
Parliament will be in recess for the next three weeks for all the party conferences, so my next ‘week ahead’ will be posted on 18th October.
