I invited Sir Keir Starmer MP, Labour’s Shadow Immigration Minister to Sheffield to see and hear first-hand from people in our city about the benefits and challenges immigration brings.

The visit forms part of a national listening tour Keir is undertaking in re-shaping Labour’s policies on migration.

During the visit yesterday, Keir and I met with university, college, hospital and business leaders at a meeting hosted at the University of Sheffield, to talk about immigration issues facing students and highly-skilled workers. We then had a discussion with local groups working with asylum seekers, refugees and victims of trafficking to discuss their experience.

In the afternoon, we joined Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts on a walkabout in the Page Hall area of Sheffield to talk with local residents. We ended the day at a meeting with Labour Party activists.

It was great to hear from so many people. Their views and comments will help us look at the issue from every angle and use real evidence and experience to inform our policy.
