My week starts by meeting the Chief Executive and the Chair of the Gangmasters Licensing Authority, which protects vulnerable workers in UK food and drink processing and packaging, agriculture and shellfish gathering -; and I’ll be talking about their extended role. It follows on from work I’ve done challenging labour market abuse through the Modern Slavery Bill and the Immigration Bill, and in my continuing role as a Trustee of Focus on Labour Exploitation.

After that, I’ll be meeting with Transport Minister Paul Maynard MP to discuss concerns that the electrification Midland Mainline will be postponed again, on which I recently challenged Ministers, describing any further delays as a “complete betrayal”. 

Last week Theresa May bowed to Labour pressure and accepted that the Government must publish their plan for Brexit negotiations before triggering Article 50. On Wednesday Shadow Secretary of State Keir Starmer will be delivering a key speech about where we go now with Brexit, which I’ll be attending as a member of Labour’s Shadow Brexit team.

Also in Westminster this week, I’ll be attending a meeting of the Labour Campaign on Electoral Reform, of which I’m the Chair; meeting the CBI about the impact of Brexit on business; talking to Unison about higher education; and I’ll be holding meetings with PCS and the NUS.

I’ll be heading back to Sheffield on Thursday evening and On Friday I’m meeting with the City Council about the proposals for a new secondary schools on the Bannerdale site; talking to the Chief Executive of Guild HE; meeting the police to discuss how they’re tackling the rise in hate crime since the EU referendum; catching up with the Chief Executive of the Sheffield Credit Union; joining other Sheffield MPs in a meeting with City Council leaders; and meeting the new Chief Executive of the Children’s Hospital.
