In a debate in the House of Commons today on the recent £250 rise in tuition fees, I called for a complete overhaul of the unfair and unsustainable student finance system which is saddling graduates with tens of thousands of pounds of debt.

I also argued that the Government should immediately reintroduce maintenance grants for students from lower income homes, reverse retrospective changes to the repayment threshold which forced graduates to repay more than planned, and reintroduce bursaries for nursing, midwifery and allied health courses after changes this year led to a 22% drop in applications at Sheffield Hallam University.
