In my speech to Parliament, closing the first day of the debate opened by Theresa May on Tuesday 4th December, Labour campaigned to remain in the European Union because we believed it to be in the economic and political interests of our country and of the continent that we share. But we accepted that we lost the referendum, which is why we voted to trigger article 50. The past two years, though, have been squandered, as negotiations with the EU27 have taken second place to those between the warring factions in the Conservative Party — and the country is paying the price.
