After Ministers said that care workers should be paid more on Monday, I challenged Boris Johnson in PMQs today to provide the money to do it. The Ministers’ comments followed the publication of new immigration rules that will prevent people from coming to work in social care.

Care workers should be paid more; I’ve long argued for better pay, training and support. But that’s in the hands of the Government. The Chair of their own Migration Advisory Committee said that they should receive up to 50% more than current rates. But Johnson rejected my challenge for him to commit the Government to fund an increase.

Low pay rates, combined with the new immigration rules which will block international recruitment, will deepen the already serious crisis in social care.
