After the huge disappointment of last night’s match, following a tournament with so many high points (not least the Blades at the heart of the team), the appalling abuse directed at some of the players showed why we must redouble our efforts to challenge racism – and why Boris Johnson was so wrong to indulge those who booed the team for taking the knee.   My week starts with a further session of the inquiry into quasi-detention following the use of former military barracks being conducted by the All Party-Parliamentary Group for Immigration Detention of which I’m a member.

Later today I hope to be challenging the Health Secretary again, as I did last week, on the reckless approach to the lifting of Covid restrictions from next Monday. I’ll also be speaking against the Government’s Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill, which is a stoking up another ‘culture war’ and protecting hate speech while ignoring the real issues facing our universities and their students.

Tomorrow I’m joining a meeting of the All-Party Group on Gambling Harm, looking at the growth of online gaming and its impact on children and young people, meeting with the More than a Score campaign on SATS, and attending a meeting of the Labour Movement for Europe on working with our sister parties across the continent as we build a new relationship with the rest of our continent outside the EU.

I’ve been drawn for an Oral Question to Alok Sharma, the Minister responsible for COP26, on Wednesday and will be pushing for stronger action to tackle the climate emergency. I’ll also be joining a session of the APPG on Migration inquiry into the impact of the new immigration rules on employers, as we continue to hear of the post-Brexit difficulties faced across many sectors.
