Paul Blomfield Former MP for Sheffield Central
Last week I joined constituents, and other leaseholders caught up in the devastating building safety scandal from across the UK, at the Leaseholders Together rally outside Parliament.
It was great to see so many people, supported by MPs and Peers from across political parties, but it’s shocking that the Government are still failing homeowners on problems not of their making. Those who travelled to London and hundreds of thousands of others are victims of comprehensive regulatory failure. They were let down as unsafe buildings were signed off and are being expected to pay of tens of thousands of pounds to fix the failings of developers.
It was also a good opportunity to highlight the many other reasons we need leasehold reform and, along with many other MPs, I will be trying to amend the Building Safety Bill to force the Government to make these homes safe, and then use the full resources of the state to recover the money from those responsible.
