This week I joined fellow MPs and Peers visiting Richard Ratcliffe at the site of his hunger strike outside the Foreign Office, and urging Ministers to act to save Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has been imprisoned in Iran since April 2016.

Richard has been on hunger strike since the 24th October, a week after his wife was informed by Iranian authorities that she has lost her appeal. Richard is calling for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to act immediately to secure the release of Nazanin, Anoosheh Ashoori and other British nationals arbitrarily detained in Iran. As the UK government hosts world leaders in Glasgow, including a delegation from Iran, Richard is sleeping in the cold, and has vowed to continue his hunger strike until action is taken to secure Nazanin’s release.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori are both British Nationals who have been arbitrarily detained in Iran for over five years and four years, respectively.

Nazanin, Richard and their whole family have suffered hugely over the last four and half years. The Government must put pressure on Iran to release those it is holding on baseless charge and ensure that their family can be reunited as soon as possible. Liz Truss is the fifth Foreign Secretary since Nazanin was imprisoned; now’s her chance to step up the action and secure her release.
