Since refugee crisis resulting from Putin’s war in Ukraine started, I’ve been pressing the Government to do more – and lots of constituents have written to me urging action. Today, as he announced the new ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme, I told Michael Gove that the Government’s reluctance to respond to the refugee crisis has shamed the UK and damaged our reputation abroad.

Today’s announcement is a step forward, although short on crucial detail, but I told Gove that we needed to go faster to make up for lost time and pressed him on when community groups would be able to register to host families. Contradicting the impression he’d given earlier, he told me that they would be able to sign up from Friday, so I’ll be liaising with the Council, City of Sanctuary and others in Sheffield on the next steps for Sheffield.

I do have worries about the Government’s scheme, and will continue to press for improvements, but for those without direct family connections it’s the best way to offer support – find out more here.
