Over Easter, the Government’s plans to offload the asylum system to Rwanda were announced to the press, causing public outcry – with widespread opposition to the proposals.

While the Government has previously promoted an approach which would see asylum seekers sent offshore to be processed, these plans go further, and mean that those who are granted asylum receive this status through the Rwandan system – they are not permitted to return to the UK at all.

The Home Secretary has failed to tell us how much this inhumane plan will cost per asylum seeker. When Australia tried a similar model, it fell apart after a year and cost billions – working out around £1.7 million per asylum seeker.

I pressed her on who would be eligible to be deported to Rwanda. While the Government has suggested to the media that it’d be ‘adult men’ prioritised for transfer, the Home Office factsheet explains that “every person who comes to the UK illegally or by dangerous and unnecessary methods…will be considered for relocation to Rwanda”.

The Home Secretary again refused to answer. I’ll continue to fight this unworkable and outrageous policy.
