My Speeches and Questions

You can see all the speeches I have made in Parliament, along with the answers to my parliamentary questions, on a huge range of issues, by clicking here.

Shadow Minister

In October 2016 I was appointed as a Shadow Minister in Labour’s Brexit team, led by the Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union Keir Starmer MP, holding the Government to account as they negotiate Britain’s departure from the EU. Following the election of Keir Starmer as Labour Party Leader in 2020, I was appointed Shadow Minister for Brexit and EU Negotiations working across the Shadow Cabinet Office and Shadow International Trade teams, and held that post until the end of the EU transition period on 31 December 2020. Read more about my work in this role here.

Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) Committee

I served on the Business, Innovation, and Skills (BIS) Select Committee from 2010 to 2016, but stood down when I was appointed a Shadow Minister, as MPs can’t be on a Select Committee while serving on the frontbench. During my time on the BIS Committee we undertook inquiries into a wide range of issues affecting business and industry, further and higher education, science and innovation, skills and apprenticeships – and a lot more besides. You can read the reports that the committee has published here.

Other roles

All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) play an important role in putting issues on the Parliamentary agenda. I am Chair of the APPG on Students, which I set up, Co-Chair of the APPG on International Students, Secretary of the APPG on Universities, Secretary of the APPG on Debt and Personal Finance and Vice-Chair of the APPG on Motor Neurone Disease. I’m also Chair of the Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform.
