I stood for election in 2010 because I was concerned about growing alienation from democratic politics and I wanted to try and make politics more accessible. Some of the ways I’ve done this are:

The Big Conversation

At the start of each Parliamentary year I organise a series of community meetings and events for constituents to tell me what you think I should be doing in Parliament. Last year I held 40 events with hundreds of people attending across the constituency. Find out more about the Big Conversation and let me know about your suggestions for future events.

Parliament trips

Twice a year I organise a coach trip to Westminster. You’ll get a guided tour of one of the world’s most iconic buildings, including the Commons and Lords Chambers, time in the public gallery watching Parliament in action, and a Q&A with me on any issues you want to raise. Get in touch to find out more.

Once a month I send out an e-newsletter outlining what I’ve been doing in Parliament and asking for views. Nearly 6,000 constituents now subscribe. If you’d like to join them, get in touch.

Advice surgeries

I hold open surgeries twice a month at my office where you can come and discuss problems and issues with me. To book an appointment at a surgery please ring my office on 0114 272 2882.

Coffee mornings

I’ve held a number of coffee mornings, where someone hosts an informal get together with their neighbours. If you’d like to host one, or have a chat about it, get in touch.

Weekly diary

When Parliament is sitting every Monday morning I post a blog summarising what I’m doing in the week ahead and welcome views. See it here.

My website is meant to be as informative, interactive and navigable as possible. I want it to offer a clear idea of what I stand for and how I represent you in Parliament. I also want you to be able to get in touch easily.

I update my Facebook page frequently as another way of keeping in contact with constituents. I re-post items from my website, link to local news stories and share information about campaigns and causes that I am involved in.

I use my Twitter account to update people about what I’m up to and to share my thoughts on news stories and current affairs. Lots of people tweet me every day and I try to reply as soon as I can.

Drop me a line on any issues that are concerning you. I can’t always reply immediately, because up to 300 people write to me every day, but I note your views at the time and reply as soon as I can.
