Since July I have been challenging the Government’s Higher Education and Research Bill, which had its Third Reading in the House of Commons last week. This week I’ve a couple of meetings with Peers to discuss some of the issues I’ve been pressing on the Bill, as it goes to the House of Lords for debate, scrutiny and amendments.

In my role as a Shadow Brexit Minister, I’m speaking at an event organised by London Higher focussing on the issues facing the capital’s universities following the referendum result. I’ll be covering many of the points that I made in my speech in Westminster Hall debate last week -; which you can read here. I’ll also be meeting with Claire Moody MEP, member of the European Parliament’s Budget Committee, Industry, Telecommunications, Research and Energy Committee, and the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), and then on Thursday there are Brexit Questions when we’ll be grilling Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union David Davis and his Ministers on their plans (or lack of them).

But this week isn’t just about the Higher Education Bill and Brexit. On Tuesday I’ll be joining constituents from Sheffield for Sanctuary in Parliament, an event organised by the national City of Sanctuary movement which first started in Sheffield. Later that evening I’ll be at a meeting to set up a new All Party Parliamentary Group on Proportional Representation, an issue on which I am already active as Chair of the Labour Campaign on Electoral Reform.

My Shadow Ministerial role means that I’ll be in Parliament on Friday again, in case there are any ministerial statements or questions related to Brexit. I’ll then be heading back to Sheffield on Saturday where I’ll be speaking at the UNISON Policy Forum.
