After an extraordinary election that defied the pundits, I’m back in Westminster today. I’m hugely grateful to the people of Sheffield Central for the overwhelming support that they gave me last Thursday. It’s been an enormous privilege to represent Sheffield in Parliament for the last seven years and I’m looking forward to continuing where I left off just a few weeks ago. I’ll continue to work for everyone in the constituency, whether you voted for me or not, and continue to base my priorities on your concerns.

Today I’m preparing for the start of the new Parliament. We meet tomorrow for the election of the Speaker, which is followed by the swearing in of members in preparation for the business of the new Parliament, which starts with the Queen’s Speech next Monday. We’ll also have meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP), reflecting on an election which saw the biggest increase in Labour’s share of the vote since 1945.

I’m back in Sheffield on Thursday, where I’ll be meeting with my team, catching up with individual casework and preparing for my 2017 Big Conversation. Taking place in the three recess weeks in September/October, it’s the way I set my priorities through a huge community consultation -; with open meetings, drop-in events, and a survey of all 40,000 homes in the constituency. If you’re part of a group that could host an event, or want to get involved, contact me here.

Over the weekend, I’ll be marking the first anniversary of the murder of my colleague Jo Cox by attending events organised for The Great Get Together. I’ll be starting by speaking on Friday at the Medina Majid on Wolseley Road, then joining in community events throughout the constituency. I’ll also be out in Nether Edge and Sharrow, campaigning for Jim Steinke, Labour’s candidate in the Council by-election to be held on 22 June.
