Local elections are going to dominate the political news this week, and a lot of my time too. After a weekend of knocking on doors, talking to people about both the Council and Mayoral elections, I’m heading back to Westminster this morning. But I’ll be back home on Thursday for Election Day and I’ll be at the count for most of Friday.

Today I’m sponsoring a Dignity in Dying event in Parliament which will bring together people who have personal experiences of the consequences of the current law preventing assisted dying in the UK. I strongly believe that the law should be changed and in 2015 I backed a Private Members Bill which would have allowed terminally ill adults to get help to end their own lives -; see this article I wrote in the Daily Mirror.

Before that, I’d been expecting to be in the Chamber for Amber Rudd’s latest statement on the Windrush scandal -; on which I was one of the 140 MPs who wrote to her two weeks ago and have written again urging Government promises to be backed up in law. Clearly she will not now be making a statement, but I hope the Prime Minister will now be held to account for her role in setting deportation targets. Tomorrow, I’ll be at the relaunch of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Proportional Representation and I’ve a meeting at the Dutch Embassy in my role as a Shadow Brexit Minister.

I’m delighted to be welcoming the brilliant Manor-based weight management programme SHINE Health Academy, and some of the young people they support, to Parliament on Wednesday. I’ve organised meetings for them to talk to MPs about the value of specialist obesity services. I’ll also drop into a Fair. Vote event to back reducing the voting age to 16. On Thursday, I’ll be taking part in Brexit Questions in the Commons before heading back to Sheffield for the elections.
