I wrote to the Brexit Minister asking about the Government’s plans for the rights of EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in the EU in the event of no deal. Those plans include bringing forward the deadline for an application to the Settled Status scheme by six months, from June 2021 to December 2020. The Minister’s insistence that it gives people more time after the ‘change in circumstances’ of our relationship with the EU is misleading: it is simply six fewer months in what would be a more uncertain and chaotic time for EU nationals. The Minister later informed me that the letter had in fact not been sent and assured me I would receive a response as soon as possible. I look forward to reading it and will continue to press him and the Government on the rights of EU nationals and their families in the UK, and of British citizens in the EU.
