I’m returning to Westminster today after Parliament and all political activity was rightly suspended during the period of national mourning following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The Government have not set out the business for the days we will be sitting this week, although we know there will be a statement from the Chancellor on Friday, with more details on the Government’s energy proposals as well as their wider economic policy – in which it appears that they will be doubling down on their tax cuts for big business and the wealthiest, while letting others sink and public services pay a heavy price.

The statement is being rightly seen as a budget but is not described as such by the Government in order to avoid the independent assessment of their plans that would otherwise be required from the Office of Budget Responsibility – continuing the contempt for transparency and accountability from the Johnson administration.

Parliament will then be back in recess for party conferences, after which I’ll post my next weekly preview on 11th October.
